How Should We Measure Profound Leadership?

We have an infatuation with knowing what skills and actions are considered "good leadership skills". To confess, I spend a lot of my time teaching and coaching leadership skills. But I don't think skill accumulation is how we evaluate leadership.

Even though embracing leadership skills and mindsets is necessary, the true evaluation of your leadership capacity will be measured not in skill accumulation, but in whether you create the environment you intend to create.

Profound Leaders leverage skills to create a desired environment.

A professional basketball player's objective isn't to be the best dribbler or passer. Those are skills. Their end result is to create an environment of winning. Skill accumulation helps them get there.

A skilled architect can design amazing concepts. But a successful architecture firm requires more. It requires you to sell the concepts to buyers, to facilitate the customer relationship, and to create an environment that customers deem an exceptional experience. The end result is a successful business, not just creative concepts.

Leadership is no different. Great leaders accumulate amazing skills. Profound Leaders leverage those skills to customize their ideal environment.

That environment might be a dynamic sales team energized each week. It might be a client-centered management firm, where client needs are kept at the forefront. It might be a collaborative workplace, where your workforce is engaged, excited, and committed to the vision.

You see, leadership is deeply connected to the people that are being led. Meaning that the environment you create is more profoundly effective at leading to success than just simply having a laundry list of skills accumulated.

As a leader, you create an environment...a culture. Which means your leadership must encompass not just skills, but intuition, systems thinking, and values, as well.

Great leaders have skills. Profound Leaders create environments that drive success..

Go. Be. Profound
