Own your Leadership

You've heard me say enough times that management and leadership are different. We manage stuff.
We lead people.
One of the biggest traps I find leaders fall into is when they try to manage people by leading stuff. That's backwards. They draw up great plans and processes, but have very little connection to the people they expect to embrace those plans.

To get out of that trap, they do whatever they can to force their end result to work.
This is the genesis of an authoritarian leadership style. It involves the desire to lead, without the willingness to seek the skills for leadership. This often results in a frustrated leader who resorts to leveraging fear, consequences, or mandates to get the job done.
Remember, we manage stuff.
We lead people.
We manage day-to-day operations and procedures.
We lead people towards a common goal.
Management maintains the status quo.
Leadership inspires people and creates change.
This distinction means we need to acquire and leverage different skillsets to be good at each. A good leader takes ownership in learning the skills necessary to lead.
Own Your leadership.
If you want to lead people, go to the people.
Don’t expect them to come to you.

Don't expect them to come to you.
